With five ladies competing for three Olympic spots, competition just to make the Japanese team was fierce, especially considering two of the ladies had won world titles. With Miki Ando's spot secured by a second-place finish at the Grand Prix Final, two spots were up for grabs at Nationals. In the end, it came down to Yukari Nakano and Akiko Suzuki battling it out for the final spot, with Suzuki edging Nakano by 0.17 points. Upon seeing her placement, she immediately began crying.
A talented junior skater, Suzuki missed two seasons of international competition due to anorexia. Her family told her, "Forget about skating you have to become healthy," but skating was everything to Suzuki, so she used it as motivation. "I wanted to be healthy because of skating, and for that reason I was able to fight the illness." She was able to recover. "I have heard from a lot of fans who suffer from anorexia, and the letters said that the people got lots of hope from me. These voices give me lots of energy and hope."
She enjoys reading. She collects Beanie Babies, because Zip the Black Cat was "born" on her birthday and she received him as a present. Zip's tag reads "Keep Zip by your side all the day through. Zip is good luck, you'll see it's true. When you have something you need to do, Zip will always believe in you." Suzuki loves yoga and calligraphy. She says her favorite restaurant is the Olive Garden, but she really likes the appetizers, "yummy vegetables." She likes the movie "Charlie's Angels" because "A strong woman is cool," as she wrote on her web site.
