Allison Schmitt is a swimmer competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

Allison Schmitt was one of the best freestyle swimmers in the U.S. heading into the 2012 Olympic Trials, and she backed up that title by winning two races — the 200m and 400m freestyle. She'll swim those two events in London, along with the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relays.

Schmitt went to the 2008 Olympic Trials hoping to qualify for a relay. She ended up finishing second in the 200m freestyle, qualifying her to swim that race in Beijing, as well as the 4x200m free relay. Katie Hoff won the race, breaking the American record, but Schmitt was only 0.40 seconds behind and also swam under the previous record. Schmitt joined Hoff, Natalie Coughlin and Caroline Burckle on the relay in Beijing, where the squad finished third behind Australia and China. Schmitt placed ninth in the 200m freestyle at the Games.

Schmitt has been on a number of medal stands since the Beijing Olympics, most notably at the 2009 (two silver) and 2011 (gold) World Championships, and the 2010 Pan-Pacs (two gold). Her top events are still the 200m freestyle and 800m freestyle relay.

Schmitt grew up in Canton, Mich., where she was a 10-time All-American and a four-time state champion at Canton High School. During her senior year in 2008 she swam for Bob Bowman, who also coaches Michael Phelps, at Club Wolverine. Schmitt enrolled at the University of Georgia in the fall of 2008, where she competes under coach Jack Bauerle. During the summer Schmitt relocates to Baltimore to work out with Bowman at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club.

Known for having a carefree attitude, Schmitt provides comic relief wherever she is. After arriving in Omaha for the 2008 Olympic Trials, Schmitt started playing in the pool with a new underwater camera — a present for her 18th birthday. "I had to remind her," Bowman told the Detroit News, "'You know, there's a swimming meet coming up, and it's, uh, kind of an important one.'" She is also known for telling jokes and goofing around, and legendary Michigan coach Jon Urbanchek, who calls her Schmitty, said she is the team clown. "I know Michael [Phelps] enjoys teasing her back," Urbanchek said. "Sometimes I think they're on the same wavelength."

Not the only athlete in the family, Schmitt has an older brother, Derek, who swam at Ohio State, and an older sister, Kirsten, a former swimmer who went to Florida. Allison followed Kirsten into swimming at age 10, though she also played soccer, basketball and softball and did ballet when she was younger. She even bought equipment to begin playing ice hockey before focusing on swimming. Her younger sisters, Kari and Sara, also are athletic and play several sports.
