Andy Newell is a cross-country skiing athlete competing at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
Andy Newell is one of the United States' best medal contenders in cross-country skiing. The 2006 Olympian and veteran of four world championship teams specializes in the sprint events. In Torino, he finished 16th in the individual sprint, and teamed up with Chris Cook to finish 13th in the team sprint. One month later, he earned the first World Cup podium for an American cross-country skier in more than
Newell has a prominent tattoo going vertically up the left side of his torso, with the inscription "All In Without Hope." "All in" refers to a full commitment and dedication to give it his best in the heat of competition. By "without hope," he means that his success rests not on hope, but sheer will. Newell designed a T-shirt with the slogan that sells online.
Newell was on skis at age one and, being an active boy, claims that he had already made five visits to ER to have stitches put in by the time he was five. "I was kind of one of those kids that every year was banging his head off something or jumping off something too high and hurting himself." His love for the outdoors and fearless attitude helped launch higher goals in cross-country skiing. He enrolled at Stratton Mountain School, a ski academy devoted to turning young skiers and snowboarders into future Olympians.
When he was a high school senior, Newell co-founded a film production company which continues to engage him to this day. X Ski Films has churned out three full-length features: Generation X-Ski (2002), American Skier (2004) and A Day in the Life (2008). The aim of the movies is to show that cross-country skiing—both recreational and competitive—has the cool and flashy elements of the Winter X Games sports.
Back flips seven-twenties and dinner rolls are not a traditional part of cross-country skiing, but do not tell Newell that. Having thinner skis on his feet has not limited his thrill-seeking side. "I've spent a lot of time in the air on my cross-country skis. [My classmates at Stratton] had their boards and Alpine skis and I had my cross-country gear and we'd go out and hit the half pipe and do all that kind of stuff. I learned to do tricks on my cross-country skis." Somewhere, Bjoern Daehlie is scratching his head in wonder.
Newell grew up in a household where cats were the pet of choice. He currently has four cats at home, Rachel, Cleo, Arthur, Zombie. He has no problems with dogs, but explains his preference for cats in an athlete's terms: "I spend a lot of time on the roads roller skiing and road biking and I've never once been chased on the road ski by a cat."
In 2009, Newell was one of seven North American winter athletes selected from a pool of 50 applicants to receive a $30,000 grant from Spectra Energy Corp. The Houston-based natural gas pipeline company offered its support to athletes of lesser-known and under-funded sports, including speed skating, skeleton and Newell's trade, cross-country skiing. The only other U.S. athlete to receive the grant was skeleton slider Noelle Pikus-Pace.
