Angela Funovits is one of the expert magicians featured in Syfy's reality magic competition series "Wizard Wars."

A studious and soft-spoken girl in her early years, Angela Funovits overcame her shyness with the help of magic. She began modeling at the age of 11 after being scouted by an Elite Model Management agent on a trip to New York. In her teen years, she competed in beauty pageants and earned rankings on state and national levels. This presented her with numerous awards for her magic talents and offered her a platform to speak about her vision of combining magic with medicine.

Funovits graduated from high school in 2005 with highest honors and entered the B.S./M.D. program at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), a rigorous medical training program that allows students to become physicians in as few as six years. In 2007 she completed her Bachelor of Science degree magna cum laude and was shortly thereafter asked to audition for a spot on NBC's "Phenomenon," which conducted a search for the world's greatest mentalist with Criss Angel and Uri Geller. NEOMED offered Funovits a leave of absence in order that she could perform on the show before beginning her graduate studies.

After several months of live competition on "Phenomenon," Funovits was awarded second place by the vote of the American public and went on to perform for television specials in Germany, Japan, France and Canada, while touring her live show throughout North America. During this time, she developed and expanded her production company, Seraphim One, Inc., which allowed her to extend live entertainment to film and television production.

Two years after departing from medical school for "Phenomenon," Funovits decided that it was time to return to NEOMED. Many were shocked that despite being well-established as an entertainer, she would commit herself to years of rigorous medical training. "I longed for the rare access to humanity that we have in medicine," she explained in an interview.

Funovits returned home to begin her medical degree in 2009 and worked simultaneously on coordinating outreach events as The Magic of Medicine, an organization that she founded in an effort to give back using the art of magic. With the group, she organized a number of magic workshops for families touched by cancer and also produced a series of live theater shows in conjunction with the Players Guild Theatre to benefit the American Cancer Society.

After spending a week at a dermatology clinic during medical school, Funovits fell in love with the specialty. Intrigued by the potential for individual contribution to the field through research and publication, she sought out the mentorship of Drs. Robert Brodell and Eliot Mostow, two distinguished clinical and academic dermatologists on faculty at NEOMED. Together they developed and published a research article in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD) detailing the causality and public health implications of the low uptake of the herpes zoster vaccine, as well as clinical recommendations for this matter.
