Anya Ayoung-Chee from "Project Runway" is one of the designers competing in Season 9 of the Lifetime reality fashion design competition series. She currently makes a living as a fashion designer and is from the Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. She is 29 years old.
Anya Ayoung-Chee ("Project Runway 9") realized she had potential as a designer when she had the opportunity to consult on her wardrobe for the Miss Universe pageant in 2008. The first garment that she ever made was a slouchy gray jumpsuit that she wore to that event. She has a fine arts bachelor's degree in communications design from Parsons School of Design. She won a Cacique Award for excellence in styling for a theater production in Trinidad. In the past, she has worked as a graphic designer, stylist, merchandiser, and a beauty queen.
Her favorite designers are Haider Ackermann, Stella McCartney, Gareth Pugh, Dries Van Noten, Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake and Alexander McQueen. Ayoung-Chee considers earrings to be a fashion must. She considers her design strengths to be spotting prints that create dynamic garments and bringing her graphic design training into her work. She says though that she need to improve her sewing and construction skills. Over the years, her work has been heavily influenced by the diverse cultures that comprise Trinidad and Tobago, and the Caribbean as a whole. When she's designing, she likes listening to reggae, soca, jazz, hip-hop and pop music.
