Ariana Kukors is a swimmer competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

Ariana Kukors qualified for her first Olympics by finishing second in the 200m IM at the Olympic Trials in Omaha — the same place where she came up short in 2008. She entered the 2008 Trials as one of the top individual medley swimmers in the country, but she failed to qualify for Beijing after finishing third in the 200m IM and sixth in the 400m IM. In the 200m breaststroke, Kukors took sixth. "One of the mistakes I made in 2008 was trying to be so much better than I was before," Kukors said in a 2011 Omaha World Herald story. "I was already doing things right and put my work in, but I got caught up in being extraordinary instead of just being myself every day." Kukors finished the 200m IM 0.08 seconds behind second-place Natalie Coughlin at the Trials.

Kukors quickly shook off the 2008 disappointment and got back to work, which paid off at the 2009 World Championships when she won the 200m IM in a world-record time of 2 minutes, 6.15 seconds — beating second-place Stephanie Rice by nearly a full second. Kukors also earned a silver medal in the 800m freestyle relay at the meet, and at the 2010 Short-Course Worlds she won the 100m IM and took third in the 200m IM. In 2011, Kukors finished third in the 200m IM.

Kukors is the middle of three girls in her family, and she says sisters Emily and Mattie are "the absolute rocks in my life." All three are swimmers, although Emily is now retired from competitive swimming. Mattie, who trains at Arizone State, joined Ariana at the 2012 Olympic Trials. Growing up, their father would sometimes make them do "boy things," says Kukors. These included crabbing near their Seattle home, which would always end in a crab feast and ice cream.

Kukors swam for Auburn High School her freshman year and won the 200m IM state title, but she decided to drop high school swimming after that in order to concentrate on her club team under coach Sean Hutchinson — a move that molded her into a world-class swimmer. "With the goals I have for myself, I was looking at bigger fish," Kukors said in a 2006 Seattle Post-Intelligencer article. "I had to give up a few other things along the way." When Hutchinson was named the head coach of the Fullerton (Calif.) Aquatics Sports Team in 2009, Kukors left the University of Washington and followed him to the Southern California club team.

Among Kukors' interests is cooking, more specifically juicing. She likes to frequent the local farmers markets in California to pick out fresh fruits and vegetables, and then head home to try a new recipe. "I love juicing and coming up with new combinations of fruits and veggies to throw in my juicer," she said.

Kukors said her parents always kept her busy growing up, and that led to her learning the piano, a short stint playing the guitar and singing. She used to sing and play for the piano "for hours" after school. If Kukors had a bad day, she would start "pounding on the keys of the piano, and two hours later I would be singing at the top of my lungs playing a piece from Beauty and the Beast. It was a great way for me to relieve stress." Kukors said in 2011 she sang in front of her teammates at a swimming retreat.
