"Big" John McCarthy has ruled the ring as a referee for more than 14 years. An imposing figure and a mixed martial arts (MMA) pioneer, McCarthy has officiated more than 600 bouts and is one of the original authors of the sport's rules and regulations. A former Los Angeles police officer who is a Tactical Self-Defense instructor at the Los Angeles Police Academy, McCarthy also serves as a commentator for various MMA events.
