Bobby Flay is one of the judges on the reality competition series, "Food Network Star." He can also be seen in "Iron Chef America," "3 Days to Open with Bobby Flay," "Grill It! with Bobby Flay," "Throwdown with Bobby Flay" and Cooking Channel's "Brunch @ Bobby's." In addition, he was recently a team leader in "Worst Cooks in America" and a judge in NBC's "America's Next Great Restaurant."

Bobby Flay's culinary versatility is evident in the multiple talents he brings to the field: as critically acclaimed chef, restaurateur, award-winning cookbook author and television personality. However, his first priority always remains with his restaurants: Mesa Grill on Fifth Avenue; Mesa Grill at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas; Bar Americain in New York City; Bobby Flay Steak at Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa in Atlantic City; Mesa Grill at The Cove, Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas; and his latest opening, Bobby's Burger Palace (BBP), located in Lake Grove, New York on Long Island.

Bobby discovered his culinary identity at the age of 17, working as a cook at the famed theater district haunt, Joe Allen's. The job had been arranged by his father, who was a partner in the restaurant. After a short time, Joe Allen himself became so impressed by Bobby's emerging talents that he paid the young cook's tuition to The French Culinary Institute. Bobby obviously excelled and later received the Institute's first Outstanding Graduate Award in 1993, and now serves there as Master Instructor.

Following his graduation in 1984, Bobby worked with restaurateur/owner Jonathan Waxman at Buds and Jams, where he first discovered the sweet-heat of Southwestern ingredients. It was at these burgeoning restaurants that Bobby met other icons of the era — Wolfgang Puck, Jeremiah Tower — who he credits with spawning an entire generation of chefs. "Chefs like Wolfgang [Puck] and Jonathan [Waxman] gave a lot of chefs in my generation a career," says Bobby. "They created a genre that proved good food didn't have to be fussy; that food could be delicious and creative while embracing great colors and textures." After Jams, Bobby debuted as Executive Chef at the East Village's Miracle Grill where he caught the attention of restaurateur Jerome Kretchmer. Kretchmer offered the 25 year old the opportunity to create his own sensations at Mesa Grill, which opened in 1991.

"I'm hoping to put a new and colorful twist on Southwestern cuisine," said Bobby just before Mesa Grill's launch. He certainly did and since then the flame-haired chef from Manhattan has earned widespread acclaim, including the Best Restaurant 1992 award for Mesa Grill by New York Magazine's Gael Greene. The restaurant's two-star review in 2000 by The New York Times' critic William Grimes raved that "the sassy fare at Mesa Grill surpasses anything of its kind elsewhere in New York. Mr. Flay, to his credit, has seized on the Southwestern idiom and made it a natural part of his cooking language." In the wake of such critical success, the young chef was made partner. Soon after, Bobby teamed with businessman Laurence Kretchmer to open Bolo in November 1993 in the Flatiron district.

During Bolo's reign, Bobby drew inspiration from the bravado and complexities of Spanish food, deftly blending the unique flavors of Spain with more familiar American ingredients. Bobby was voted the James Beard Foundation's Rising Star Chef of the Year 1993, an award that honors the country's most accomplished chef under the age of 30. A decade later, its menu reenergized by the introduction of tapas, Bolo was awarded a rare three stars by The New York Times.

In 2004, Bobby brought his unique amalgam of innovative food and inviting hospitality to Las Vegas with the 2004 opening of Mesa Grill at the legendary Caesars Palace. The city's upbeat urban energy provides an ideal backdrop for Mesa Grill's lively cuisine.

At New York's Bar Americain, which opened in March 2005, Bobby's vision takes the intimacy of a midtown brasserie and injects it with authentic American flavors and style. Drawing exclusively from regional American ingredients, Bobby's dishes rejuvenate old classics and celebrate the abundance of America?s diverse and delicious heritage. Bar Americain has received rave reviews from the press, including two-stars from The New York Times.

The recognition Bobby has gained for his stellar dishes has built his reputation as a major force not only in New York but also nationwide. In addition to his restaurants, Bobby shares his knowledge and enthusiasm for food through his cookbooks and cooking programs on Food Network. His first book, "Bobby Flay's Bold American Food" (Warner Books, 1994), won the 1995 International Association of Culinary Professionals award for design. Five more cookbooks soon followed: "From My Kitchen to Your Table" (Clarkson Potter, 1998), "Boy Meets Grill" (Hyperion, 1999), "Bobby Flay Cooks American" (Hyperion, 2001), "Boy Gets Grill" (Scribner, 2004), and "Bobby Flay's Grilling For Life" (Scribner 2005). In October 2007, Bobby released "Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill Cookbook: Explosive Flavors from the Southwestern Kitchen" (Clarkson Potter), and in April 2008, his eighth cookbook, "Bobby Flay's Grill It!" (Clarkson Potter) hit bookstores.

Since debuting on Food Network in 1996, Bobby has continuously hosted programs that bring cooking tips and information on American regional fare to a national audience. His shows include "BBQ with Bobby Flay," the Emmy-winning "Boy Meets Grill," the beloved "FoodNation with Bobby Flay" and "Throwdown with Bobby Flay," where Bobby sets out on a secret mission to challenge the best of the best in different areas of food — award-winning BBQers, bakers, pizza makers and more — to challenge them to an unexpected cook-off of their specialty, right then and there. Bobby was crowned Iron Chef America in 2003 and continues to participate in Iron Chef Competitions. He is also Food Correspondent for "The Early Show" on CBS and CBS Sunday Morning, where he regularly informs a national audience about seasonal dishes and ingredients. And beyond the small screen, Bobby serves as a monthly food contributor to Maxim magazine.

Bobby's daytime series on Food Network, "Grill It! with Bobby Flay" features grilling enthusiasts who have created their own unique recipes and have interesting grilling tips to share with viewers. "Grill It! with Bobby Flay" is not a competition-style show, but a celebration of the art of grilling. Selected individuals will have the opportunity to share their recipes and techniques, as they cook alongside Bobby.

As passionate about New York as he is about food, Bobby found a unique way to gave back to the community by establishing a culinary scholarship for New York City high school students through his alma mater, The French Culinary Institute. He worked closely with budding young chefs in Long Island City High School's C-Cap (Careers through Culinary Arts Program), and then personally selected the student with the greatest potential to be the recipient of this annual scholarship. Bobby documented this experience in his Food Network special "Bobby Flay: Chef Mentor," which earned him a James Beard Foundation award for a National Television Food Show 2005.

Bobby Flay Steak, which opened in July 2006 at Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, is Bobby's first-ever steakhouse. Here, he presents classic steakhouse fare that he remembers enjoying as a child in New York City and on the Jersey Shore as well as new dishes that incorporate his famous grilling techniques and signature Southwestern fare. Bobby Flay Steak showcases a variety of regional steaks prepared with zesty rubs and seasonal ingredients and a special Lobster Bar that features fresh lobster creations.

In March 2007, Bobby brought his vibrant Southwestern cuisine of Mesa Grill to The Cove, Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas. The restaurant is Bobby's first outside of the United States. Shortly following the opening, the James Beard Foundation inducted Bobby into its Who's Who of Food & Beverage in America at its 2007 Awards ceremony, recognizing his significant and lasting achievements and national impact within the culinary industry.

In July 2008, Bobby opened Bobby's Burger Palace. A convenient and casual spot, Bobby's Burger Palace serves an array of burgers inspired by Bobby's extensive travels throughout America and his love of the grill. From north to south, coast to coast, each BBP burger is Bobby's tribute to America's regional flavors and traditions, made with only premium-quality ingredients and condiments.
