Caitlin Leverenz is a swimmer competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

Caitlin Leverenz qualified for her first Olympic team by winning the 200m IM and finishing second in the 400m IM at U.S. Trials in Omaha. She was fifth in the 200m IM and eighth in the 400m IM at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai. Leverenz narrowly missed a spot on the Beijing team, as she finished third in the 200m breast at Trials in 2008. She says now that the 2008 near-miss was good for her development. "Looking back, it's really OK the way things happened because it was a great learning experience," she said.

Being a member of the Cal swim team has two significant perks: Training under Teri McKeever, who will be the first woman to coach a U.S. swimming team at an Olympics this summer; and swimming with Natalie Coughlin, who owns 11 Olympic medals. Both have proven to be instrumental in Leverenz's career. "[Coughlin] is at the top level of the sport and has been for many years, so to see how she takes care of her body and approaches the sport is a great example," Leverenz said.

Leverenz had plenty of highs in 2011, ranging from her performance at the World Championships (two finals appearances) to winning titles at the U.S. Winter Nationals (two) and Duel in the Pool (one). Also at the Duel, Leverenz took second in the 400m IM and third in the 200m breaststroke. This successful season for the now 21-year-old came a year after she grabbed a pair of bronze medals at the 2010 Pan-Pacific Championships.

Leverenz's first big win occurred at the 2007 Pan-American Games, where she won the 200m breaststroke, and later that season she earned two third-place results at the Duel in the Pool. While at Sahuaro High School in Tucson, Ariz., Leverenz was a Scholastic All-American from 2006-2009.
