Camille Lacourt is a swimmer competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for France.

Something of a late bloomer as swimmers go, Camille Lacourt contested his first world championship meet in Rome in 2009, and was fifth in the non-Olympic 50m back. Last summer in Shanghai, he won the world title in the 100m back, and posted the fastest time in the world in the event in 2011 and to date in 2012. A back injury prevented him from making a serious attempt at qualifying for the Beijing Games.

The key to Lacourt's success (and explanation for his relatively late-career surge) came when he was 21, when his then-coach Richard Martinez did something that had a profound affect on his approach to swimming ever since. "Richard did something that would serve me for the rest of my career. He fired me," Lacourt said. "I understood very quickly that to succeed at the highest level, you have to make certain choices." His current coach is Romain Barnier.

Lacourt has been in a relationship with French TV celebrity and Miss France 2008 Valerie Begue since 2010. The couple moved in together in Marseille in 2011, but are regularly apart due to her work commitments in Paris and his training and competition schedule.

Nickname is "The Giraffe," and standing between 6-5 and 6-6, it's easy to understand why… Lacourt started swimming at age five because he wanted to be able to go fishing with his dad… Began seriously training for the sport at age 15… In addition to training for swimming, Lacourt has worked in a trading firm in the past and thinks he may want to work in management or events after his swimming career.
