Carice van Houten stars in "Game of Thrones" on HBO as Melisandre.

Dutch actress Carice van Houten is one of her country's most successful and beloved actresses. She had her breakout role in 2000 with a TV movie in the Netherlands directed by Martin Koolhoven, "Suzy Q," for which she received a Golden Calf for Best Actress. The following year she starred in "Miss Minoes," based on the book by Annie M.G. Schmidt, and received her second Golden Calf for Best Actress. In 2006 she won her third Golden Calf for Paul Verhoeven's "Black Book," which was voted the best Dutch film of all time. She went on to show her comedic chops in the blockbuster movie "Love Is All."

Carice has not gone unnoticed abroad. In 2008 she made ​​her English debut in the thriller "Dorothy Mills" and her first Hollywood role as Nina von Stauffenberg in Bryan Singer's "Valkyrie," starring Tom Cruise. She went on to star in Julian Fellowes' "From Time to Time," alongside Alex Etel, Timothy Spall and Maggie Smith, and "Repo Men," opposite Jude Law and Forest Whitaker.

In 2010 she returned to her homeland to star in the hugely successful film "Stricken," directed by Reinout Oerlemans, and "The Happy Housewife" directed by Antoinette Beumer. For her role as Leah in the latter film, she received her fourth Golden Calf for Best Actress. More recently, Carice starred in "Black Butterflies," opposite Rutger Hauer and Liam Cunningham, and "Intruders," with Clive Owen.
