Carrie Brownstein stars in IFC's short-based comedy series, "Portlandia," alongside Fred Armisen ("Saturday Night Live"). Brownstein also co-created and co-wrote the series with Armisen and Jonathan Krisel ("SNL"; "Tim and Eric Awesome Show," "Great Job!"). In its freshman season the series received such critical acclaim as, "happenstance beauty" by The New York Times, "An eccentric, surprising little microbrew of a show" by Time Magazine and "funny and charming" by The Los Angeles Times.

Carrie Brownstein is a writer, musician and actor. She was a member of the critically acclaimed rock band Sleater-Kinney (1995–2006), which during its heyday was heralded as America's Best Rock Band by Time Magazine. In Sleater-Kinney, Brownstein toured internationally and played countless venues and festivals, including Lollapalooza, Coachella and Madison Square Garden. The band performed on "The Late Show with David Letterman," "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" and on IFC's "The Henry Rollins Show." Brownstein was named one of the top female electric guitarists by Elle Magazine and Rolling Stone Magazine lists Sleater-Kinney's song "Dig Me Out" — featuring the overdriven riffs of Brownstein — as one of the 50 greatest guitar songs of all time. In 2006, Brownstein earned a spot on Rolling Stone's list of the "25 Most Underrated Guitarists of All-Time" as their highest-rated female guitarist of all-time.

Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Believer, Slate, and numerous book anthologies on music and culture.

In 2010, Brownstein formed a new band with Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss called Wild Flag. The band signed to Merge Records and released their first album in September 2011.
