Caryn Davies is a rower competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

Growing up, Davies followed her older brother, Kenneth, into the sport. Kenneth was the captain of the men's crew team at Cornell University. Before rowing, Davies competed as a downhill skier from the age of 10 to 16. She also played soccer, softball, volleyball and field hockey. Her father, Peter, is a professor of plant biology at Cornell, and her mother, Linda, is a computer software designer.

As a freshman in high school, Davies moved with her family from Ithaca, N.Y. to Australia, where her father was on sabbatical. It was there where she learned how to row. After a year of rowing, she was named the Most Promising Oarswoman at her club. She returned to Ithaca and started rowing at her local high school, but the program was not structured well, so she rowed in the single and trained by herself.

In 1999 Davies made the junior national team, and was part of the first-ever U.S. junior women's crew to win a gold medal at the Junior Worlds in 2000. She entered Harvard University as a freshman in 2001, and rowed for Radcliffe all four years. In 2003 she rowed in the varsity eight that won NCAA Championships, and her crew finished third in 2005. Davies graduated in 2005 with a degree in psychology.

Davies enjoys sailing, horseback riding, downhill skiing and dance. She was on the ballroom team during her senior year at Harvard, and has taken ballet lessons in the past. She hopes to eventually go to law school.

Aside from rowing, Davies also took up yoga as she was recovering from a back injury her freshman year in college. At first, she was drawn to it for its physical elements, but she has become more interested in the spiritual aspects. She has taught yoga classes to her teammates, and has worked behind the desk at a yoga center while training.

In 2002 Caryn Davies rowed in the women's eight that won gold at the World Rowing Championships. The following year she competed in the non-Olympic women's four, winning gold again. At the Athens Games, Davies and the women's eight won silver and set a world record in the heat. The following year she finished fifth in the quadruple sculls at Worlds. Davies was a member of the women's eight that claimed gold at the 2006 and 2007 World Rowing Championships. She returned to the Olympics in 2008, helping the women win their first gold in the event since 1984. Davies took a break from rowing after Beijing but returned in 2011. That year she won gold in the eight at the Rowing World Cup stop in Lucerne and then finished eighth in the pair at the 2011 World Rowing Championships, where she helped secure the U.S. its spot in the London 2012 Olympic Games. She was named to the U.S. Olympic women's eight for the third time in 2012.
