After a season off in 2008-2009, Daisuke Takahashi returned to competition in a big way with a second place finish at Skate Canada and a spot in the Grand Prix final. He topped his rival, Nobunari Oda, at Japanese Nationals and enters the Vancouver Olympics as Japan's number one ranked man - an impressive feat considering the depth Japan's program has right now.
Daisuke Takahashi opted to sit out the 2008-09 season to undergo surgery on his right knee. He returned to competition in October 2009.
"I've decided to have surgery," Takahashi wrote on the web site of the Kansai University Ice Skating Club. "I will sit out this season and it will take time to return to my best condition. It's very disappointing but just as an athlete needs courage to make progress, he also needs courage to know when to take time off."
Nobunari Oda was initially named the 2006 Japanese champion, and an award ceremony was held where he was awarded gold and Takahashi the silver. But later, it was determined that Nobunari had done too many triple jumps. The scores were adjusted, and the medals were swapped, and because Japan had only one entry for the Torino Games, Takahashi was sent to the Olympics and Nobunari to Worlds. Takahashi finished eighth in Torino, Nobunari was fourth at Worlds. Despite his low finish, Takahashi said the experience helped him prepare for more pressure-filled situations.
Takahashi's mother is a hairstylist and his father is an architect. Because both of his parents are very busy, he spent a lot of time with his grandparents as a child. All of his three older brothers were involved with karate, but Takahashi says he didn't want to do it because he "hates pain." He says that his parents were worried about him because he "cried a lot" as a child, so they wanted him to play sports. Takahashi says that he was "scared of the hockey equipment" at the rink, so he started figure skating.
