Danell Leyva is a gymnast competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA. He is the 2011 world parallel bars champion and the 2011 U.S. champion.

Danell Leyva earned an automatic spot on the men's gymnastics team by winning the Olympic Trials and satisfying all of the additional selection criteria. Leyva says he wants to meet members of the Cuban team (his birthplace) and one of his idols, sprinter Tyson Gay, while he is in London.

Leyva helped the U.S. win the world bronze medal at 2011 Worlds in Tokyo. The pressure was on in the all-around, where he qualified in third position. Leyva struggled on vault and any attempt to launch a comeback on the final event - high bar, his favorite - was shut down seconds into the routine. Leyva clipped his chin on the high bar on his Liukin release move and fell to the ground. Appearing slightly disoriented, his coach and stepfather helped him off the mat and his competition was over, finishing in last place. Two days later, Leyva rebounded to claim his first individual medal - a gold in the parallel bars final.

Leyva knew he had the potential to challenge defending champion Jonathan Horton for all-around gold at 2011 Nationals, and he was right. Leyva hit twelve-for-twelve over two nights of competition en route to his first U.S. title.

Leyva's best event is high bar, where he packs huge release moves into one of the most difficult sets in the world. Leyva adds original twists to several common skills and is sure to earn a gasp from the audience on the high bar.

He is coached by his step-father Yin Alvarez, who is a minor celebrity in the gymnastics world. Alvarez is known for his extremely enthusiastic coaching style, cheering, clapping, and living through his stepson's routines from the sidelines. Leyva says it is not distracting, but great support.

He was born in Cuba before moving to Peru for six months until settling in Miami. Both his mother and step-father were gymnasts in Cuba. Leyva would like to visit one day.

Leyva has a blue towel with stars that he wears around his neck at competitions in between each apparatus. There is no significance to the towel other than coach/step-father Yin Alvarez saying, "Do you like blue and stars?" and handing him a towel.

In his (limited) free time, Leyva enjoys painting and drawing. After his gymnastics career he would like to be a comic book artist and is already developing his own storyline and several characters.
