Daniel Gillies stars in "Saving Hope" on NBC as Dr. Joel Goran. He also plays the recurring role of the vampire Elijah in The CW's "The Vampire Diaries."

Born in Canada and raised in New Zealand, Daniel Gillies recently finished his film, "Broken Kingdom," which he starred in, wrote and directed. Gillies was also the lead in the independent film "The Sensation of Sight" opposite David Strathairn ("Good Night and Good Luck").

Gillies has appeared in episodes of "NCIS," "True Blood" and "The Glades." He was also seen in "Spider-Man 2" as Tobey Maguire's nemesis and Kirsten Dunst's love interest, John Jameson, and starred in the indie films "Uncross the Stars," opposite Barbara Hershey and Ron Perlman, and Roland Joffe's "Captivity," with Elisha Cuthbert. Gillies also starred opposite Ian Somerhalder in "The Sensation of Sight." Other credits include "Bride & Prejudice," with Aishwarya Rai and Martin Henderson, and Steven Spielberg's TNT miniseries "Into the West."

His stage credits include "The Godboy," for which he won a Chapman-Tripp Theatre Award for Best Actor for his role as Jimmy Sullivan. His other credits include "The Lower Depths," "Anthony and Cleopatra," "PlayLunch," "Julius Caesar" and "The Judas Kiss." Gillies has also written and directed his own play, "Maybe," which was performed at the Unitec Theatre in New Zealand.

Gillies is married to actress Rachael Leigh Cook.
