Danny Sapani stars in "Penny Dreadful" on Showtime as Sembene, an African warrior and longtime ally of Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton).

From Macbeth to "Misfits" and "Doctor Who" to "Little Britain," Danny Sapani is an accomplished and versatile actor whose work spans film, television and theater. On the big screen, Sapani recently starred in Danny Boyle's "Trance," alongside James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel and Rosario Dawson. Upcoming features for Sapani include his first Bollywood movie "Singa M 2," as the lead villian, and David Hughes' "Hardboiled Sweets," starring Ian Hart.

Born in Hackney, London, and trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, his film work includes Alex de la Iglesia's "The Oxford Murders," starring Elijah Wood, Aisling Walsh's "Song for a Raggy Boy," starring Aidan Quinn, and Mike Figgis' "Timecode II."

Sapani's wide ranging television credits include episodes of the most recent series of "Doctor Who," directed by Peter Hoar and starring Matt Smith, "Shirley," directed by Colin Teague, "Garrow's Law," directed by Ashley Pearce and starring Andrew Buchan, "Misfits," directed by Tom Green, "Documental," directed by Justin Theroux and starring Steve Coogan, and "Little Britain," directed by Geoff Posner. Most recently, Sapani has been seen alongside Peter Mullan in "The Fear."

Sapani's extensive theater work encompasses The National Theatre, Royal Court, The Globe and The Donmar Warehouse. He has worked with leading directors including Sam Mendes in "To the Green Fields Beyond," Mark Rylance in "Julius Caesar," Nick Hytner in "His Dark Materials" and Michael Attenborough in "Big White Fog." Sapani is an experienced Shakespearean actor and played Macbeth in an award-winning production directed by Max Stafford Clark. Sapani's last leading critically acclaimed performance was in "Moon on a Rainbow Shawl" at The National Theatre.
