David Chum from "Project Runway" is one of the designers competing in Season 9 of the Lifetime reality fashion design competition series. He has been running his own clothing label, Selahdor, for about three years now and waits tables the rest of the time to supplement his income. He currently lives in Boston, Massachusetts, but was raised in Merong, Battaan, Philippines.
The first garment that David Chum ("Project Runway 9") ever made was probably a ballroom gown for a show called "Cinderella Waltz." He realized he had potential as a designer in high school, when he was designing costumes for a theater company. It came naturally to him, and he enjoyed it. The only sewing class he ever took was in middle school, where he learned to sew a pillow. All his knowledge is from textbooks and experimentation. He won several awards for his costume designs at the annual Massachusetts High School Drama Competitions. He was also recently awarded a grant from the Emerging Designer Fund in Boston. In the past, he's worked as both a waiter and artist's model.
His favorite designers are Alber Elbaz, Alexander McQueen, Madame Gres, Nicolas Ghesquiere and Christian Dior. Chum considers a good pair of jeans to be a fashion must. He says his fine art training has given him a good sense of proportion and shape and that he is best at structured, tailored looks. He considers pattern drafting to be his number one strength. His design weakness is getting too wrapped up in meticulous details. He also says, "Being self-taught is a weakness. Every day in my studio is an experiment of sorts." Over the years, his design has been influenced by old movies, nature, armor, flowers, insects and mythology. More recently, it's been butterfly chrysalises, which has translated to anatomical seaming in his work.
When he's designing, he tends to like listening to upbeat music like Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Adele, and Britney Spears. Other times though he likes it mellow and listens to Cat Power or Belle and Sebastian.
