David Harewood stars in "Homeland" on Showtime as David Estes.

British actor David Harewood has enjoyed success on stage, television and in film.

A graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, Harewood has been a fixture on the London stage for many years, earning praise for his work in such plays as "His Dark Materials," under the direction of Nicholas Hytner, and "Henry IV," Parts 1 and 2, both presented at the National Theatre. He also played the title role in the Royal National Theatre's production of "Othello," which later went to Broadway. Recently, David received universal acclaim for his portrayal of Martin Luther King Jr. in Katori Hall's new play "The Mountaintop" in the West End.

On British television, Harewood was recently seen in "Robin Hood" as Tuck, "The Palace," and the miniseries "The Last Enemy." He was a regular on the series "Fat Friends" and "Babyfather," and had a recurring role on "The Vice." He recently played Nelson Mandela in the TV movie "Mrs. Mandela" and will be seen in the Christmas special "Treasure Island" for Sky. He has also guest starred on a number of series, including "Strike Back," "Doctor Who" and "Criminal Justice."

On the big screen, Harewood appeared in "Blood Diamond," starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou and Jennifer Connelly, "Separate Lies," written and directed by Julian Fellowes, and the 2004 screen version of William Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice," starring Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons.

Harewood has directed a children's theater group in London, aimed at involving underprivileged and at-risk youth in the performing arts.
