Dawnn Lewis is perhaps best known to television audiences for starring as Jaleesa Vinson on NBC's "A Different World" and as Robin in "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper." She has also played recurring roles in ABC Family's "The Secret Life of the American Teenager," The CW's "One Tree Hill," HBO's "Dream On!" and Lifetime's "Any Day Now." Movie fans remember her from Keenan Ivory Wayan's "I'm Gonna Get You Sucka."

Music peers know Lewis is the co-writer of the theme song for "A Different World," as well as the composer of songs for artists such as jazz great, Grover Washington Jr. and legend Nancy Wilson.

Lewis starred in the NBC 10-hour miniseries event "The 10th Kingdom," opposite John Larroquette, Diane Weist, Rutger Hauer and Kimberly Williams. Dawnn was also seen in the HBO World Premiere movie "Under Pressure," a psychological thriller co-starring with Charlie Sheen, Mare Winningham and John Ratzenberger. Prior to that Lewis starred with Sinbad in the HBO Original western-comedy "The Cherokee Kid," as Stagecoach Mary, the stogie-smoking, bank-robbing, stagecoach driving lady of the West.

With her roots firmly planted on the theatrical stage, Dawnn wowed audiences as Angelique in "The Marriage," directed by Ted Lange. Her portrayal of a woman suffering from paranoid schizophrenia was so moving it garnered a coveted NAACP Theatre award for Best Lead Actress in a Play – 2000. Lewis also starred as Smitty in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," opposite Matthew Broderick, had audiences captivated in the Mark Taper Forum's "The Street of the Sun," and had them completely charmed with her sassy and sultry portrayal of Pistache in "Can Can!"

Lewis recently finished recording for the upcoming Universal Pictures film "Braer Rabbit," which will also feature the voice talents of Nick Cannon and Wanda Sykes. Lewis is having great fun doing a range of voices for several animated TV series including "Futurama," "King of the Hill," "C. Bear & Jamal" with Tone Loc, "Bruno the Kid" with Bruce Willis, "Mortal Kombat," "Spider Man," "Spy Dogs," "Charlottes Web II" and "Heavy Gear."

As a singer and songwriter, Dawnn has been honored wit an ASCAP award and four BMI honors for Best Song; a Grammy for singing on "Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration"; a Gold record for her vocal performance on the Take 6 album, "So Much to Say," as well as one for co-writing "Your Love" on Grover Washington Jr's album "Next Exit."

Dawnn has done a series of motivational speaking engagements and concerts for organizations such as the H.E.L.P. Group and the American Cancer Society. She is also involved as a board member for the national youth groups, Little Angel Bunny Foundation, Campfire Boys and Girls, Youth Entertainment Studios (Y.E.S.) and is the Director of the Speakers Bureau for Arnold Schwarzenegger's Inner City Games. As an avid sports fan, Dawnn also donates her time to many NFL, MLB and NBA charities and events including the NBA's Stay In School Jam!, as well as several of their players private foundations.

Growing up in Brooklyn with strong traditional Caribbean family values, Dawnn attended the High School of Music & Art, graduating at the age of 16, then graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Miami.

Dawnn has been a spokesperson for the National Council for AIDS Awareness, American Lung Association, Easter Seals, NAACP, 4-H Club, UNICEF, the United Negro College Fund, and the Office of Substance Abuse Prevention, Athletes & Entertainers for Kids, the aforementioned Campfire Boys & Girls and Y.E.S. She also lectures on motivational topics to college and civic groups across the country.
