He was born in Houston, Texas, to a real estate agent and an electrician. A graduate of Bellaire High School and an attendee of the University of Houston, he also has an older brother, Randy Quaid, who is an actor.
Soon after dropping out of college to pursue an acting career in Los Angeles, he landed the plum role of a working-class tough in "Breaking Away," which was followed soon thereafter by "The Right Stuff." Other early film credits include "The Long Riders" with his brother Randy, "9/30/55," "Crazy Mama," "Dreamscape," "All Night Long," "Our Winning Season," "Cavemen," "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden," "Enemy Mine," "Innerspace," and in the lead role of Jerry Lee Lewis in "Great Balls of Fire!"
In 1983 Quaid starred with Mickey Rooney in the Emmy Award-winning television movie "Bill" and its sequel, "Bill: On His Own." A year later he co-starred with Randy Quaid in the off-Broadway production of Sam Shepard's "True West," which he later reprised in Los Angeles.
In the 1990s Quaid appeared in a number of films, including "Wyatt Earp" as Doc Holliday, "The Parent Trap," and Oliver Stone's "Any Given Sunday." More recently, he has appeared in "Yours, Mine and Ours," "The Day After Tomorrow," alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, "The Flight of the Phoenix," and as Texas high school baseball coach turned 40-year-old rookie pitcher Jimmy Morris in "The Rookie."
Quaid received honors from the New York Film Critics Circle, The Independent Spirit Awards and Chicago Film Critics Association Award as Best Supporting Actor and also garnered nominations for a Golden Globe Award and Screen Actor's Guild Award for his performance in the critically acclaimed 2002 film, "Far From Heaven."
More recent credits include "Pandorum," starring alongside Ben Foster and Cam Gigandet, "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," starring alongside Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans and Sienna Miller, and "Vantage Point," starring alongside Forest Whitaker and Matthew Fox.
In his free time, Quaid plays with his band, The Sharks, in addition to flying planes and golfing.
