His love for theater began when he was four years old and since then has performed in over 35 musical theatre productions throughout Southern California. He recently received an Inland Theater League Award for his performance as Huck Finn in "Big River." Other favorite roles have included Danny in "Grease," Joseph in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," the Tin Man in "The Wizard of Oz," Harold Hill in "The Music Man," Oliver in "Oliver," Conrad Birdie in "Bye Bye Birdie" and many others. He has developed his skills over the years performing with Metropolitan Educational Theater founded by Alex H. Urban, trains vocally with Linda Corwin, and also with Center Stage and Keely Milliken.
Derek performed on the television show "America's Most Talented Kids." He was also an AFNA Vocal Solo Grand Champion and a Southern California Vocal Association finalist for four years. He was also chosen as a semi-finalist in the Los Angeles Music Center's Spotlight Awards competition.
He was on his high school varsity baseball team and was a member of The National Honors Society.
