Elaine Griffin from "American Dream Builders" is one of the designers competing in the NBC reality competition series.

Elaine Griffin defines good design as implementing a refined version of the client's own vision for their space, whatever the look, feeling, style or budget. Rooms should look like the people who live in them, she says, and the decorator's hand should enhance a client's personality, never eclipse it.

A graduate of Yale University and the New York School of Interior Design, Griffin began her design career in the office of architectural behemoth Peter Marino, following a nine-year career as a publicist in New York and Paris. She officially opened her own firm in 1999.

Griffin is the contributing editor of design for Better Homes & Gardens, designed 11 Good Works Makeovers for Oprah's O at Home, was a contributing/special projects editor at Elle Decor, and is ranked as one of House Beautiful's Top 100 American Designers.

In 2009, Griffin published her first book, "Design Rules: The Insider's Guide to Becoming Your Own Decorator" (Gotham Books). It arms readers with the timeless truths, rules and proportions that professional designers use every day — the stylistic backstories to perfect-looking rooms.

A participant in the 2003 Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse, Griffin's work has been featured in publications that include Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Better Homes & Gardens, Southern Accents, The New York Times, New York Daily News, New York Post and New York magazine. She makes regular appearances on design segments on TV, including NBC's "Today."
