Elena Hight is a snowboarding athlete competing at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
Born in Princeville, Hawaii, on the island of Kauai, Elena Hight moved to South Lake Tahoe, California, at age seven after her family spent a one-year stint in Boise, Idaho. Her parents decided to move the family because they were tired of Hawaii and needed a change of climate, and the one year in Idaho was while they were figuring out where to settle. At age six, her father taught her how to snowboard at Idaho's Bogus Basin, the resort that also spawned the career of U.S. aerialist Jeret Peterson.
The youngest member of the U.S. Olympic snowboarding team, Hight competed at the Torino Games at age 16, finishing sixth in the women's halfpipe final (Hannah Teter, Gretchen Bleiler and Kelly Clark finished first, second and fourth, respectively). "I could never have comprehended how big the Olympics are and really what it's like. It was way more than I could've ever expected," Hight recalls. "It was definitely a surreal experience for me, but it was amazing. By far the most incredible thing I've ever done."
A former gymnast, Hight grew up watching gymnastics at the Olympics but truly became inspired to become an Olympian when Clark won gold in women's halfpipe at the Salt Lake Games. "Seeing that really just made me want to go to the Olympics so bad and do what she did," Hight says. The two became teammates at the 2006 Games in Torino.
Hight is extremely appreciative of her biological family ("without them, really I wouldn't have been able to go after my dreams," she says), but she's also very thankful for the family that travels with her on the road. "All the girls on the [U.S.] team are really close, and we're all really lucky to have each other," she says. "But we're all really different. So I think that that's what makes it really fun is that there's so many different personalities and outlooks on life, and age groups and all of that, that we can all learn a little bit from each other. And I'm really grateful to have Kelly [Clark] and Gretchen [Bleiler] and Hannah [Teter] and Ellery Hollingsworth all on the team because they do help me out with a lot of things. I mean, when you're stressed or have a question about something, they've all been through it before so it's easy to ask them for advice and they actually know what they're talking about, which is nice."
