Federica Pellegrini is a swimmer competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for Italy.

Italian swimmer Federica Pellegrini won both the 200m and 400m freestyle at the 2009 World Championships, setting world records in each in front her home crowd in Rome. Two years later at the 2011 Worlds, Pellegrini repeated in both events — but did not break her world records. However, her 400m freestyle time in 2009 of 3:59.15 marked the first time a woman had broken the 4-minute barrier in the event.

Pellegrini rebounded from a disappointing fifth in the 400m freestyle, where she's the world-record holder, to win gold in the 200m free. She broke the 200m record twice in Beijing, including in the final when she swam 1:54.82.

Federica Pellegrini grabbed the attention of the swimming world in Athens when she took silver in the 200m freestyle. Having just turned 16, she was the youngest Italian athlete to win an individual Olympic medal. Pellegrini said afterward that she wasn't surprised by her quick improvement in 2004, even though she dropped nearly two seconds between May and August. What did surprise her, however, was how much the public and media reacted to her success. She was compared to American Cynthia Woodhead, who as an unknown 14-year-old in 1979 broke the world record in the 200m free (she didn't compete in the 1980 Games because of the U.S. Olympic boycott).

Pellegrini's success has been overshadowed by her romantic life, since she began dating fellow Italian swimmer Luca Marin in early 2008. Marin had been dating French swimmer Laure Manaudou, until a public breakup at the European Short Course Championships in December 2007. Shortly after the breakup, nude pictures of Manaudou appeared on the Internet, and Marin was accused of releasing them, though he denied any knowledge. Pellegrini, who is one of Manaudou's top rivals, began dating Marin soon after that. All three had trained together at the Italian club LaPresse. Pellegrini broke up with Marin in 2011 and is now dating fellow Italian swimmer Filippo Magnini.

Since Athens, Pellegrini has steadily improved in the 200m free, breaking that world record in the semifinals at the 2007 Worlds. But Pellegrini ultimately finished third and lost the record to Manaudou in the final. And Pellegrini has dropped far more time in the 400m free. She broke the world record in the 400m free, which had belonged to Manaudou, at the 2008 European Championships, marking a four-second drop from her time at the 2007 World Championships, where she finished fifth. Of 29 long-course world records broken before the Olympics in 2008, Pellegrini's was the only one set in a suit other than the Speedo LZR Racer.

Nicknamed "Lioness of Venice," Pellegrini decorates her bedroom with lions and, though she says she has outgrown it, used to watch The Lion King frequently. Her hometown of Mirano, is located right outside of Venice. Pellegrini started swimming in first grade because of a back problem.
