Gabby Douglas is a gymnast competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA. She is a 2011 world team champion.

Gabby Douglas automatically earned a spot on the team by winning the Olympic Trials. In that meet, she ('officially') defeated reigning world all-around champion Jordyn Wieber for the first time in her senior career. The two will help lead the U.S. women's team and will likely be a strong 1-2 punch in the all-around finals as well.

Douglas was invited to compete at the 2012 American Cup in March as an alternate alongside her teammates Jordyn Wieber and Aly Raisman, who were officially entered in the event. Douglas debuted and nearly stuck a new Amanar vault and showed off upgrades on the uneven bars. While the scoreboard did not show it — she earned the highest score of the competition. Weeks later she competed at the Pacific Rim Championships, but fell on her Amanar to open the competition and tweaked her ankle. Douglas struggled on beam and despite a strong performance on bars, scratched the floor exercise to protect her ankle (and thus, did not factor into the all-around). She bounced back two days later to win the bars event final.

2011 marked Douglas' senior debut. She was age eligible to compete at the World Championships by one day as her birthday is December 31, 1995. In Tokyo, Douglas delivered her signature high-flying uneven bars routines to help team USA take home the gold medal.

Douglas struggled in her senior national debut, finishing seventh in the all-around after major problems on beam. She fell off the apparatus several times on both nights of competition. Douglas managed a third-place result on her signature event, bars.

Coach Liang Chow says it is all about building consistency — something she has struggled with in the past. Douglas moved from her home town in Virginia Beach to Des Moines, Iowa to train with Chow in October 2010. She lives with a host family there and shares a coach with 2008 Olympic silver medalist Shawn Johnson. "Shawn's here and she's working so hard to come back and it's so inspiring to me," she told the Des Moines Register. Douglas' favorite event is beam, the same event Johnson won the Olympic gold medal on in Beijing.

Her father, Timothy, was deployed in December 2010 and served with the Air National Guard in Afghanistan, his third tour of duty in a war zone (he has since returned). Gabby and her father kept in touch via email and Skype. She has a big family, with three older siblings, two sisters and one brother. Gabby's older sister Arielle was a gymnast/dancer/cheerleader; her sister Joyelle ice skates and brother Jonathan (one year older) is into football and karate. Gabby told the Des Moines Register, "We have this dream of [Jonathan] playing football and me doing gymnastics at Florida."
