Season 9

In Season 9, the doctors of Seattle Grace are faced with the aftermath of last season's plane crash, as the fates of Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Derek (Patrick Dempsey), Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) all hang in the balance.

Before the crash, their paths seemed set: Having passed their boards Meredith, Cristina, Alex (Justin Chambers) and Jackson (Jesse Williams) all planned on taking positions at different hospitals, leaving Seattle Grace behind. Meanwhile April's (Sarah Drew) career as a doctor seemed to be over when she failed her exam and was fired. Meredith and Derek were focused on being new parents to baby Zola and were debating whether to move into their dream house or start over in Boston. Cristina and Owen's marriage was still on the rocks, and Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona were happily settling into motherhood. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) had decided to give love another chance with her new fiancé, Ben (Jason George), and Richard Webber (James Pickens, Jr.) found comfort in the arms of Jackson's mother, Catherine Avery (Debbie Allen).

The plane crash changed everything. Now, with their futures unknown, the doctors of Seattle Grace must learn to adapt to changes, cope with losses and move forward with their relationships and careers. Seattle Grace is a place where life isn't lived in the black and white, but in the shades of grey.

Season 5

Recipient of the 2007 Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Television Series and multiple Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series for the past two years, "Grey's Anatomy" returns to ABC for its fifth season.

Is "happily ever after" possible for Meredith Grey and Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd? With Meredith experiencing a breakthrough in therapy - the realization that she and Derek can be extraordinary together, rather than ordinary apart—she and Derek now face the highs and lows of being a committed couple.

Continuing their first year as residents at Seattle Grace Hospital, Meredith, Cristina Yang, Izzie Stevens and Alex Karev have interns of their own to mentor, including Meredith's half-sister, Lexie Grey. Lexie has become a roommate and confidante to George O'Malley, who, after divorce with Callie, a breakup with Izzie, and learning that he failed his residency test by only one point, is striving to get both his professional and personal life back on track.

After attending to his girlfriend Rebecca's mental illness on his own, and revealing that he had gone through this with his own mother, Alex finds solace in Izzie's arms. Alex must continue through this difficult time, whether or not Izzie remains by his side.

Cristina, having finally won out over her tough-as-nails mentor, Erica, is back on track as a surgeon - but is there a chance for new love in her life as well?

With the encouragement of Mark "McSteamy" Sloan, Dr. Callie Torres has taken a chance on love with cardiothoracic surgeon Erica Hahn; now she and Erica must figure out what happens after the first kiss.

Overseeing the residents is the no-nonsense Chief Resident, Miranda Bailey. Facing marital troubles and the difficulty of balancing her work and personal life, Bailey has handed her responsibilities as head of the free clinic over to Izzie. Also striving for balance is Chief of Surgery, Richard Webber, who has reunited with his estranged wife, Adele.

The doctors of Seattle Grace Hospital deal with life-or-death consequences on a daily basis - it's in one another that they find comfort, friendship and love. Together they're discovering that neither medicine nor relationships can be defined in black and white. Real life only comes in shades of grey.

Season 1 - 4

Meet Meredith Grey on ABC's "Grey's Anatomy." She's a woman trying to lead a real life while doing a job that makes having a real life impossible. Meredith is a first-year surgical intern at Seattle Grace Hospital, the toughest surgical residency program west of Harvard. She and fellow first-year interns Cristina Yang, Izzie Stevens, George O'Malley and Alex Karev were students yesterday; today they're doctors and, in a world where on the job training can be a matter of life and death, they're all juggling the ups and downs of their own personal lives.

The five interns fight to maintain friendships in this most stressful and competitive atmosphere. Meredith's medical ambition is overshadowed by a troubling secret: Her mother, a noted pioneering surgeon, is suffering from a tragic and devastating illness. Cristina is a study in contradiction; highly competitive and driven, she eschews any favors in order to make it on her own. Isobel "Izzie" Stevens, the small-town girl who paid for medical school by modeling in her underwear, battles for respect amongst her peers. George O'Malley is the warm but insecure boy next door who always manages to do or say the wrong thing—even in the O.R. Worse, in spite of his obvious attraction to Meredith, he's treated as "just one of the girls." And Alex Karev, the intern every intern loves to hate, masks his working class roots with arrogance and ambition.

The interns are guided by an established team of doctors who are determined to shape them into skilled surgeons or break them: Miranda Bailey, the senior resident responsible for training them, masks her softer side with a demeanor so tough that she's the nicknamed "The Nazi." Derek Shepherd is the flirtatious but wildly talented surgeon. Meredith thought he was her soul mate when the two began a forbidden sexual relationship—but now that the wife Meredith never knew he had has arrived, she's not so sure. Preston Burke's arrogance is second only to his skill with a scalpel. He meets his match in Cristina when they begin a less romantic but equally forbidden relationship of their own. Overseeing them all is Dr. Richard Webber, Seattle Grace's paternal but no-nonsense chief of surgery who harbors some secrets of his own concerning Meredith's mother.

"Grey's Anatomy" focuses on young people struggling to be doctors and doctors struggling to stay human. It's the drama and intensity of medical training mixed with the funny, sexy, painful lives of interns who are about to discover that neither medicine nor relationships can be defined in black and white. Real life only comes in shades of grey.

"Grey's Anatomy" stars Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey, Patrick Dempsey as Derek Shepherd, James Pickens, Jr. as Richard Webber, T.R. Knight as George O'Malley, Sandra Oh as Cristina Yang, Katherine Heigl as Isobel "Izzie" Stevens, Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey, Isaiah Washington as Preston Burke, Justin Chambers as Alex Karev and Kate Walsh as Addison Shepherd.
