Gunnar Deatherage from "Project Runway" is one of the designers competing in Season 9 of the Lifetime reality fashion design competition series. He is a 21-year-old hairstylist for Aveda in Louisville, Kentucky. He though is originally from La Grange, Kentucky. In the past he has worked as both a creative director and server.
The first garment Gunnar Deatherage ("Project Runway 9") ever made was a very simple dress for his younger cousin. They would put on performances and make their family sit down to watch them. He realized he had potential as a designer In high school. He really loved the feeling of just creating, and when people actually started to want what he was creating, his gears started turning. He's a completely self-taught designer. He got started using patterns, and when he couldn't find what he wanted, he started to drape and make his own. He was honored with a Center Ambassador dress at the 2011 Julep Ball for the Kentucky Derby.
His favorite designer is Rodarte; he says, "How fantastic that two sisters who were completely self-taught, and were the weird kids growing up, grew up to blossom into a fashion revolution." He considers lipstick to be a fashion must for all women and says his design strength is color. With his background in beauty, he understands what tones do for different shapes and skin tones. His weakness is menswear of which he's not really a fan; he feels that it has a lot more restrictions than women's wear. In the past, he was influenced by the wow factor—the dress that stops the show. Now his aesthetic is more about asking what can a woman wear out and feel completely confident in. When he's designing, he likes listening to The Knife, Portishead or Santigold radios on Pandora. He's all about Swedish techno.
