Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson stars in "Game of Thrones" on HBO in the recurring role of Ser Gregor Clegane, aka "The Mountain," for Season 4. Björnsson replaces Ian Whyte, who played the role in Season 2, and Conan Stevens from Season 1.

Icelandic actor Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson stands 6'9" tall and weighs over 400 lbs. He began competing in strongman after an injury to his ankle ended his basketball career. In 2009, powerlifting star Benedikt Magnusson saw Hafþór in the gym and encouraged him to compete in Iceland's Strongest Viking. With no real training, Hafþór won one event and made an Icelandic record in stone carrying. An Icelandic record, it should be noted is not insignificant as Magnus Ver Magnusson was a four-time winner of the TWI World's Strongest Man Contest and Jon Pall Sigmarsson was the first man to win four times. No other country has done so well.

After this auspicious beginning, Hafþór was hooked and began training solely for strongman competitions. Since 2009, he has won seven competitions. He currently holds the titles of Iceland's Strongest Man, Iceland's Strongest Viking and Iceland's Strongest Troll. Hafþór was the youngest man in the 2013 Arnold Strongman Classic, and Terry Todd recently observed that his name doesn't seem appropriate: "Hafthor doesn't sound right for a man of this size. At the least he should be Thor, or perhaps Thor-and-a-Half."
