Ian McElhinney stars in "Game of Thrones" on HBO in the recurring role of Barristan Selmy, a long-time member of The Kingsguard. While serving under the Mad King, Aerys Targaryen, Selmy never wavered in his duties, even amidst the violent revolution that dethroned him. For his commitment to the throne, King Robert (Mark Addy) pardoned him and promoted him to Lord Commander.

ANorthern Irish actor, Ian McElhinney has had a long career, appearing in film, television and theater. His film credits include "Leap Year," "Triage," "City of Ember," "Closing the Ring," "The Front Line," and "Borstal Boy."

On television, McElhinney recently played roles in the BBC miniseries "Little Dorrit," Showtime's "The Tudors" and the Irish series "Single-Handed." Other British TV credits include "Rough Diamond," "The Clinic," "Cold Feet," "Wokenwell," "Maisie Raine" and many more.

In addition to acting on the stage, McElhinney is also an accomplished, acclaimed stage director. He was nominated for a Tony Award in 2001 for Best Director (Play) for his production of the two-man Irish show "Stones in his Pockets." This was the Broadway transfer of a production at the Duke of York's Theatre in London, England, also directed by McElhinney.
