Jake Dalton is a gymnast competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA. He is the 2011 world team bronze medalist, the 2011 American Cup bronze medalist, and the 2011 vault and floor national champion.

Jake Dalton will compete in his first Olympic Games. Just 19, he posted the highest combined scores on floor and vault in the two qualification meets (Nationals and Trials) to secure his spot on the London team.

Dalton picked up two national titles on his signature events — floor and vault — at the 2011 VISA Championships in St. Paul. He edged out Oklahoma teammate Steven Legendre, also a specialist on those events, who finished second. Despite having similar strengths, Dalton and Legendre were both named to the 2011 World Team where the U.S. men won the bronze medal. Dalton also qualified for the individual floor final, but finished eighth.

Dalton was on hand at 2011 American Cup as an alternate until breakfast the morning of the competition when he was told he would be competing. He opened the meet with (what would be) the best floor exercise of the competition before struggling on his pommel horse dismount. Dalton pulled it back together and ended up taking home the bronze medal behind teammate Jonathan Horton in first and Nikolai Kuksenkov of Ukraine in second.

He says making the 2012 London Olympic team is "always on his mind." Dalton has saved some videos from the 2008 Games including Horton's silver medal-winning high bar routine and the exciting finish to the men's team competition where the U.S. claimed bronze.

Dalton won two NCAA titles for the University of Oklahoma in 2011 on floor and vault. He joins a long list of successful elite gymnasts to compete for Oklahoma, including world bronze medalist Jonathan Horton and 1984 Olympic champion Bart Connor. Dalton says the biggest difference between competing for his university and competing elite is the crowd — in NCAA his teammates scream for him throughout each event, whereas in elite, people only clap at the end.

He says his favorite events are floor and vault and his biggest struggle is on pommel horse. He adds that in 2011, however, rings may be the key event for him to earn a World Team berth.

The Reno, Nevada, native comes from a baseball family. According to StickIt Media, when Jake went to baseball camp at six years old his coach suggested he take gymnastics to strengthen his pitching arm — little did he know that Jake would soon choose gymnastics over baseball.
