Jay McCarroll was born in a little town in Pennsylvania in 1974. He was the last of six children. His father made septic tanks. His mother had a delicious hall closet stocked with remnants of fabrics and tins of buttons and bags of yarn. It was his favorite place in the house. His sisters were in the high school marching band and his brother was on the football team. He made himself costumes and twirled batons in the front yard. He imagines this is where it all started.
He studied Fashion Design at the former Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science, now Philadelphia University, where he currently teaches. He also studied at the London College of Fashion. While in London, he sold his clothes at Camden Market. He then decided he hated it and moved to Amsterdam. He sold at a few boutiques there and loved it, but he was homesick and moved back to Philadelphia.
He put together small fashion collections in Philadelphia and sold at a few boutiques there. He moved back to the woods of northeastern Pennsylvania and opened a vintage shop for a few years. He discovered yoga. He auditioned for a reality show called "Project Runway." He won the first season.
He met Molly Ringwald.
He currently lives and works in Philadelphia.
