Joey Cook from "American Idol 2015" is one of the top 24 contestants in Season 14 of the FOX reality singing competition. She sang "King of Spain" by The Tallest Man on Earth for her audition in Kansas City, Missouri.

Joey Cook is a singer, songwriter and musician who plays the accordion, ukulele, piano, banjo and mandolin. She grew up in one of the few non-military neighborhoods in northern Virginia and started singing and playing the piano at age five. She recently toured the mid-West as a member of the band Mammoth Indigo. She draws musical inspiration from artists like Kimya Dawson and Kate Nash.

Here is an interview with Joey:

When did you first start singing?

I started singing as a young child. My best friend and I would put on 'concerts' in my basement that consisted of me standing on an ottoman singing Hoku songs at the top of my lungs into a karaoke machine while she turned the echo up and down, acting as my'sound girl'.
What role does music play in your life?

Music has slowly but surely taken over my entire life. I am currently a full-time street performer and recently moved to New Orleans in order to fully surround myself with talented musicians, in hopes of learning from them and being motivated by their drive.
What makes you unique?

People refer to me as "that girl with the hair and the accordion." I'm a musician, comic creator, song writer, nail designer, professional cartoon character, dairy enthusiast, & space cadet. I've always been unwavering on what I like and who I am, to the point where it has often made the the outcast - especially as a child. But I'm finally at this point in my life where all of my 'odd ball' qualities make me stand out in a positive way.
Do you have a wish list of writers you'd like to write with? If so, who?

Lyrically, my idols are Kimya Dawson, Thao Nguyen and Valerie June. Instrumentally, I have an insane amount of respect for the John Mayer Trio and Shakey Graves.
What are your top three all-time favorite songs and why?

"My Funny Valentine" by Frank Sinatra (& 100 others). It makes me nostalgic towards my childhood & reminds me of singing Frank & Dean's music into my hairbrush as a little girl.

"True Love Will Find You in the End" by Daniel Johnston. In my eyes, Daniel represents a truly personal form of musicianship that I feel is lacking in the world.

"Rag & Bone" by The White Stripes. Because it's great.
What is your strongest musical strength?

My passion when performing. I know that if I truly put my everything into a song that I feel a personal connection to, that I can make an audience feel that connection as well.
What is your greatest musical weakness?

I get in my own head and stay there. When I'm performing a song, I sometimes loose eye contact with my audience and keep my eyes closed.
Who are your top three favorite and most influential artists? What is it about your favorite artists that you are drawn to?

Shakey Graves, Valerie June, and Kimya Dawson. With Shakey Graves, I admire his lyrics, and his "one man band" image. His songs all have beautiful and catchy melodies, and every time I've seen him live, I've been blown away. With Valerie June, it's her vocals & personality. She has such a unique and raw sound that is incomparable to anyone. She constantly plays with her instruments slightly out of tune, because that's the way she likes it, & I could listen to her speak for forever. Kimya Dawson was the most influential to me as a young woman, making me realize that to write a song you don't need to fill it with metaphors. She was my introduction to what I call 'conversational lyrics'. Lyrics that have no sugar coating, and tell a story the way it went. "my love for you is as deep as the ocean" can be told more realistically as "I love you so much, sometimes it makes my stomach hurt". I cant explain how much I appreciate this type of songwriting.
If you had to pattern your career after another artist, who would it be and why?

Carrie Brownstein from Sleater-Kinney & Portlandia. She is a strong, versatile woman, & is very strategic in what projects she chooses to involve herself in.
Why do you think you should be the next "American Idol"?

Cause I'm drastically unlike anyone you've had win the show in previous seasons. I'm not a country singer, and I don't have an Alicia Keys powerhouse kind of voice. I have my unique vocal tone and a strong personality, and I believe that is enough. I think it would inspire younger girls to make music even if they can't do insane vocal runs like Beyonce, just as I was inspired when I first heard Brooke White sing "Like a Star" in her Season 7 audition. I am a multi instrumental, talented vocalist, and I believe that I'm the breath of fresh air this competition needs.
