Jonathan "Lil J" McDaniel stars in "Bounce" on VH1.

Originally from Long Beach, California, Jonathan McDaniel started rapping at the age of 5. He showed signs of natural talent from the very beginning, always exhibiting true charisma and a strong desire to entertain. J's mother recalls him missing on one Saturday morning, only to find him performing in front of the local K-Mart with a bucket to encourage tips for his wrapping and dancing. He used his earnings to help finance his demo and thrived on his captive audience and the reaction that followed.

J's role models were Michael Jackson, Will Smith, Tupac Shakur, LL Cool J, and New Edition. Never the shy type nor the type to pass up an opportunity to move a crowd, J's deep-rooted drive and determination soon found him at an in-store autograph-signing session for one of his idols, LL Cool J. The 9-year-old Lil' J boldly re-enacted a scene from the classic hip-hop film "Krush Groove," before spontaneously flipping on his boom-box and breaking off a lil' sumthin'-sumthin' that the rapper superstar couldn't possibly ignore.

"My mom and I always used to go to functions like that," J remembers. "I would rap backstage and try to get myself in. I figured that LL Cool J was going to be at the Wherehouse; I figured that's how he must have got his deal. He came in there and rapped and they loved him. So I said, I'll do the same thing. He told me to stay behind and not go anywhere because that night he had this show at the House of Blues and he would put me on stage with him. It was really cool. Everybody was like, "That's LL Cool J's son!"

Not long after that, J's attraction to the stage led him to talking his way into a concert venue and onto the stage with the likes of the Fugees. The buzz on J found its way via Richard Tucker to Transcontinental Records, the star-making machine behind pop heavyweights N'Sync, The Backstreet Boys, LFO, and O-Town. So thoroughly impressed with the then 14 year old, they immediately flew him to their Orlando headquarters to perform and record with a stable of writers and producers.

Lil' J was soon introduced to Hollywood Records by his now manager of over a decade, Livio Harris, and former Hollywood Records executive Vaughan Halyard, who was responsible for signing him. In 2001 J soon released his debut disc "All About J." Soon after that stint, J went on to record a couple more albums with other labels.

J's new found love quickly became hosting and acting. He hosted a series of television specials for Nickelodeon that aired live from the landmark Nickelodeon Studios in Hollywood. The series featured such superstars as Usher, Omarion, B2K and Avril Lavigne, to name a few. He also landed a recurring role on the comedy "That's So Raven," as Raven Simone's crush and ultimate love interest, Devon Carter.

On the big screen, J was seen in "Barbershop," as a beauty salon counterpart, and "Norah's Hair Salon," starring Lil Kim, Bobby Brown and Lisa Raye. J went on to guest star in HBO's "Entourage" and ABC's "Cougartown" and appear in the independent films "Kill Katie Malone," directed by Carlos Ramos Jr., "Detention," starring David Carradine, and "Burning Palms" with Zoe Saldana and Dylan McDermott. More recently, he starred in the web series "9ine."

J then appeared in Robert Townsend's "In the Hive," which is considered J's "breakout" role as a respected actor in Hollywood. He plays the lead role with many dimensions, alongside seasoned actors such as Loretta Devine, Michael Clarke-Duncan, Vivica A. Fox and Roger Guenveur.
