Judy Parfitt stars in "Call the Midwife" on PBS as Sister Monica Joan. About her character, Parfitt says, "She comes from a good family and she's an innocent. She's very eccentric but she's also getting dementia so she's in and out of reality, which makes it really interesting to play because it's a very difficult line to get through."

Born in Yorkshire and trained at RADA (The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art), Judy Parfitt began her career on stage in repertory theater. She first caught international audiences' attention playing Gertrude in Nicol Williamson's film adaptation of "Hamlet," recreating her stage performance. Parfitt lent her unique talents to the role of the prince's mother in "Ever After," a retelling of the Cinderella story. She received acclaim for her roles in David Mackenzie's "Asylum," Doug Liman's "The Bourne Identity," Brian Gilbert's "Wilde," and "Dolores Claiborne," opposite Kath Bates. Parfitt was also seen in "Girl with a Pearl Earring," opposite Scarlett Johansson, Colin Firth and Tom Wilkinson.

On television, Parfitt offered a memorable turn as Geraldine James' alcoholic mother in the miniseries "The Jewel in the Crown" and has appeared in the highly acclaimed drama "ER." She more recently starred in the BBC series "Funland" and the miniseries "Little Dorrit."
