Karen O'Connor is competing in equestrian at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

Successful selection for the United States eventing team would see Karen O'Connor attend her fifth Olympic Games. Her first came in Seoul in 1988 before she won team silver in 1996 and team bronze in 2000. In 2008, O'Connor rode in her fourth Olympics at age 50 aboard Mandiba.

The 2012 London Games could be the final Olympics for the experienced O'Connor. She has openly stated that this could be her last time representing her country because her husband, David, will be taking over as coach of the U.S. team next year. O'Connor recognizes there could be a conflict of interest and said she will sit down with David and the U.S. Equestrian Federation committee members soon to discuss what she should do moving forward.

After seven years of dating, David and Karen O'Connor got married in 1993. Together they have developed the O'Connor Event Team in The Plains, Va. and spend time training new horses and training promising riders. At the 1996 Atlanta Games, the couple became the second-ever husband and wife combination to stand on the same podium in the same event of the Olympics.

O'Connor is hoping to make the Olympics aboard a new horse, Mr. Mendicott. O'Connor calls him Mr.M, for short, and he comes with a wealth of experience. Mr.M has represented Germany in Olympic and World Equestrian Games in his 13 years on earth. Frank Ostholt rode Mr. M for Germany. Veronica is also an Olympic hopeful horse that O'Connor has used in recent competitions.

O'Connor's outlook on the Olympics — and life — changed dramatically less than two week before the start of the Beijing Games. A routine morning turned into tragedy when her star horse, Teddy, was spooked and ran off from O'Connor's control. Teddy injured his right hind leg and had to be put down. "I feel like I've lost a best friend," O'Connor told USA Today at the time.

Growing up in Bolton, Mass., O'Connor did not come from a riding family. It was only after she watched a television show that highlighted Princess Anne's involvement in a three-day event that O'Connor decided she wanted to pursue riding. She got her first horse, Midnight, for her 11th birthday, and rode him around the family's orchards.
