Kevin Martin is competing in the Winter Olympics 2010 in Vancouver in curling for Canada.
Kevin Martin is synonymous with the game of curling, having emerged as Canada's best in recent years. The 2008 world champion has also won four national titles. His Alberta rink is the favorite to win gold in the Olympic competition.
A Martin-led rink won the silver medal at the 2002 Salt Lake Games, but they had entered the tournament as the heavy favorite for gold. Martin had the hammer during the last end of the tournament, but his throw was slightly too long, giving Norway the surprise victory. Martin knew he had missed an opportunity on his final attempt, saying, "It was an easy shot to win the game. It was less than an inch...just hate to miss the last shot."
One of Canada's most recognized figures of the Games, Martin is described as Tiger Woods of curling by his competitiors having won roughly $1 million on the World Curling Tour. Known as Old Bear due to his resemblance to golfer Jack Nicklaus and what Martin calls his girth in the rear, Martin receives teddy bears from fans. After one match, a fan gave him a bear with a shaved head—Martin is bald.
Jules Owchar has been Martin's coach since 1984—Martin says they've played three times a week, almost every week, since then. In addition to being his curling coach, Owchar was Martin's golf coach in college. A character on and off the ice, Owchar uses out such expressions like "hold the codfish" and "bonanza" during card games (the team often plays after practice) and Owchar can be seen chewing cigars during games when the team isn't doing well.
Martin grew up in Lougheed, Alberta (pop. 200), where his father ran a grain farm. Martin began curling when he was 8 and started skipping at age 12.
