Kitty Zhang stars in "The Butcher, The Chef and the Swordsman" as Madam Mei, the top courtesan of House of a Thousand Flowers. A femme fatale, highly skilled in arts, she is a perfect blend of mysterious, reserved and brave. Kitty Zhang embodies all of these elements, making her the ideal actress for the role. It was an unexpected surprise for the filmmakers when she signed on for the role very soon after reading the script. She began a rigorous dancing and flute lesson training schedule prior to production in preparation for her role. Her most difficult filming scene involved dancing barefooted down a staircase and onto a tabletop in subzero temperatures. Both director and actress recall the cold weather during the shoot, though it is not evident on film. Zhang held her composure and fought through the difficult conditions. She comments, "the set was full of really strong and determined performers, all whom I can learn from."

Kitty Zhang was born in Shandong province, which she left at age 15 to attend the Shanghai Theater Academy. After graduating, her first major role, which she got after actor Stephen Chow noticed her in a Kentucky Fried Chicken advertisement, came in the 2006 hit film, "CJ7." She has since worked with renowned director Tsui Hark on "All About Women" and appeared in "Shaolin Girl," "Curse of the Deserted" and "Jump." From her roles as a warm-hearted teacher to a serious and sophisticated company executive, her performances are always compelling.

She also appeared in 2007's "The Longest Night in Shanghai." Nicknamed one of China's "star girls," Zhang has appeared in numerous magazines, including Elle.
