Larenz Tate stars as Black Shawn on FX Network's "Rescue Me."
Larenz Tate has earned a reputation as one of the most talented actors in Hollywood appearing in critically acclaimed and award-winning films. Tate starred as Don Cheadle's criminal brother in the 2006 Academy Award winning Best Picture "Crash" and as a young Quincy Jones in the Oscar-nominated biopic "Ray" with Jamie Foxx.
Tate made his feature film debut in the Allen and Albert Hughes' drama "Menace II Society," and later re-teamed with the Hughes Brothers for the critically acclaimed "Dead Presidents." His role as Darius Lovehall in Theodore Witcher's "Love Jones" earned him a Best Actor NAACP Image Award nomination and the film earned the Audience Award at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival.
Tate also received the Best Actor Award at the 1999 Acapulco Black Film Festival for his role as Frankie Lymon in "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" opposite Halle Berry. Tate's other film credits include "Waist Deep," "Biker Boyz" opposite Laurence Fishburne, "The Inkwell," and F. Gary Gray's "A Man Apart" opposite Vin Diesel.
Tate added Executive Producer to his list of credits with the film "Love Come Down," which he also starred opposite R&B singer Deborah Cox.
Tate's professional acting debut was in an episode of "The Twilight Zone: The Series." Later, he garnered recognition for his starring role in the critically lauded FOX series "South Central."
In his free time, Tate devotes himself to raising awareness for youth dealing with sickle cell anemia and other life threatening diseases through The Tate Foundation, which he started with his brothers, Lahmard & Larron Tate.
He studied music and theater arts at the Inner City Cultural Center in Los Angeles. A Chicago native, Tate currently resides in the Los Angeles area.
