Matthew Macfadyen stars in Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood" (2010) as the Sherriff of Nottingham and in Michael Bottom's "The Promised Land." Matthew Macfadyen also stars in "The Pillars of the Earth" on Starz as Prior Philip.
British actor Matthew Macfadyen was born on October 17, 1974, in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. He moved around a lot and attended schools in England, Scotland and Indonesia. He was also at a boarding school in Rutland before he was accepted at the Royal Academy of Dramatic
After studying there for four years Macfadyen earned a reputation for working with the stage company Cheek by Jowl. He played a number of on-stage roles for the group, including parts in "The Duchess of Malfi," "The School for Scandal" and "Much Ado About Nothing." He was particularly well known for his work in the latter as the idiotic Benedict with a bushy moustache and a loud, obnoxious laugh. He would continue to play dramatic roles on the stage for several years, his latest role coming in "The Pain and the Itch" in 2007.
MacFadyen made his television breakthrough when he appeared in 1998's adaptation of the Emily Bronte novel "Wuthering Heights." From there he continued to land dramatic roles for the BBC, both in 1999 and 2001 with "Warriors" and "The Way We Live Now." In 2001, he also earned a great deal of critical praise for his part in the BBC drama "Perfect Strangers."
2002 saw MacFadyen working in "The Project," which showcased the rise of the New Labour party in England. Soon afterwards, MacFadyen won the role for which he has since been most recognized: that of Tom Quinn in the drama series "Spooks," again on the BBC. His character is an MI5 agent and Senior Case Officer, operating as an intelligence officer with a great deal of experience. McFadyen is one of the main characters for the first three seasons. By the end of the third season, however, he compromises a mission, because of a sudden burst of morality, and is discharged from the service. While starring in "Spooks," Macfadyen began a relationship with co-star Keeley Hawes, and the two married in 2004. They have two children, a boy and a girl, and Mafadyen acts as stepfather to Hawes' previous son.
MacFadyen has since appeared in a number of films, including 2001's "Enigma" and Ron Howard's "Frost/Nixon." He has also continued to appear in a number of BBC dramas, including "Secret Life," which deals with the touchy subject of pedophilia. He received a Best Actor award from the Royal Television Society and was nominated for a BAFTA. Macfadyen also recently had a part in a skit entitled "Mr. Bean's Wedding," opposite Rowan Atkinson.
