Melanie Chandra, aka Melanie Kannokada, stars in CBS's drama "Code Black" as Malaya Pineda and plays the recurring role of Fareeda in HBO's comedy "The Brink."

A former Miss India America, Melanie Chandra majored in mechanical engineering at Stanford University, where she was a cheerleader, served as senior class president, volunteered in India, and was a member of the Bollywood dance troupe, Dil Se. After graduating, she became a business analyst at McKinsey & Company. She left the lucrative position in 2009 though for the far more uncertain career of an actress.

Chandra has played lead roles in several independent films, including "Bicycle Bride," "D for Dopidi," "For Here or to Go?" and "Love, Lies and Seeta." Chandra Pemmaraju, the latter film's writer, producer and director, feels that Chandra's corporate background makes her a better actress. "She's used to hard work and long hours! She's also intellectual. She wants to know why her character says something."

On television, Chandra has appeared in episodes of CBS's "NCIS: Los Angeles" and "Rules of Engagement," NBC's "Parenthood," ABC Family's "The Nine Lives of Chloe King," and HBO's "How to Make It in America."

She holds a 2nd degree black belt in Shotokan Karate and won medals at the Junior Pan-American Games as a member of the USA Junior National Karate Team.

Chandra volunteers with Hospital for Hope, a nonprofit that is building a hospital in rural Jharkhand, India.
