Melissa Leo stars in "Treme" on HBO as Antoinette "Toni" Bernette. Melissa Leo also stars in "The Fighter," alongside Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg.

Melissa Leo received a 2009 Academy Award nomination as Best Actress for her virtuoso performance in "Frozen River," as Ray Eddy, a mother who finds herself involved in smuggling across the American/Canadian border through Mohawk territory. The performance won her a 2009 Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Actress, as well as numerous other prestigious awards. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008, where it won the Grand Jury prize for Best Drama.

Leo played the tough-minded Detective Sgt. Kay Howard on the acclaimed TV series "Homicide: Life on the Street" from 1993–1997 and was a regular on "All My Children" and "The Young Riders." Feature films include "A Time of Destiny," "Last Summer in the Hamptons," "21 Grams," "Confess," " and "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada."

Leo was born in Manhattan and raised on the Lower East Side.
