Missy Franklin is a swimmer competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

Missy Franklin will compete in seven events at the London Games, making her the first U.S. female to swim that many races at the Olympics. She entered the Trials with an enormous amount of pressure on her shoulders, and she answered that by qualifying in all four of her individual events and earning spots on the three relays. She won the 100m backstroke (upsetting two-time Olympic champ Natalie Coughlin) and the 200m backstroke, while finishing second in the 100m and 200m freestyle. "I am so thrilled ... definitely my biggest dream," Franklin said of qualifying in seven races.

Franklin had some national exposure starting in 2008 as a 13-year-old, but it was the end of 2009 and the entire 2010 season that got her onto the swimming map. She hit the international stage at the 2009 Duel in the Pool where she won a gold medal with the 400m freestyle relay. She also took fourth in the 100m freestyle at the meet. Her big break occurred in 2010, however, when she finished second in both the 100m and 200m backstroke at the U.S. Championships. A fourth-place result happened at the Pan-Pacs, but a few months later she opened the USA Swimming Grand Prix season with a seven-for-seven performance. She ultimately won the 2010-11 series title, which came with a $20,000 pay day.

2011 was a magical year for Franklin. Competing at the first long-course Worlds of her career, she scooped up five medals — including three gold. The breakdown: 200m backstroke, gold; 400m medley relay, gold; 800m freestyle relay, gold; 400m freestyle relay, silver; 50m backstroke, bronze. Her success at the meet caught the attention of the entire swimming world — including Michael Phelps, who said, "She's never tired, she's always swimming fast. She's really been able to come on the scene strong. I've said this all along, she's a stud." Shortly after Worlds, Franklin won the 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke titles at Nationals.

Later in 2011, Franklin broke her first world record — the 200m backstroke short-course mark at a FINA World Cup meet in Berlin. A few months after that, Franklin was part of the world record breaking 4x100m medley relay team at the Duel in the Pool.

Franklin's 2010 success earned her the "Breakout Performer of the Year" award at the Golden Goggles, USA Swimming's annual gala. She seemed to be an automatic winner of the award, as she had five top-eight results at the U.S. Championships and was the meet's highest point scorer.

Franklin finished second in the 200m backstroke and the 400m medley relay at the 2010 Short-Course Worlds in Dubai, the first international medals of her young career. Upon returning back to the United States with her parents, Franklin realized she had left her wallet in the Dubai airport. "I had to cancel everything, get a new [learner's] permit," she said.

Franklin swam at the Beijing Trials as a 13-year-old to make her the second-youngest person to ever compete at the meet. She did not come close to qualifying for the Games but the experience was crucial for the young teen. She qualified for the Trials earlier that year as a 12-year-old by swimming under the required times for the 50m freestyle and 200m individual medley. "I think you have to learn something from every meet you go to, and that's how you progress as a swimmer," she said.

Franklin's nickname is "Missy the Missile," playfully given to her by her father before the 2008 Olympic Trials. At first she didn't like the name and was horrified at her family's threat to make neon pink T-shirts that read "Missy the Missile" on the back. The shirts were never produced but the nickname has taken on a life of its own, as she has a pair of custom-made Nike sneakers with the nickname emblazoned on the heel.
