Neal McDonough stars in "Captain America: The First Avenger," opposite Chris Evans and Tommy Lee Jones, as Dum Dum Dugan. McDonough previously starred as Dave Williams on ABC's "Desperate Housewives."

A character actor and leading man seemingly cut from the same square-jawed, upstanding mold of studio contract players from the 1950s, Neal McDonough essayed flinty, often dangerous roles in films and on television throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s.

McDonough was born February 13 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He was raised in Barnstable, Massachusetts, and went on to study acting at the London Academy of Dramatic Arts and Sciences after graduating from Syracuse University in 1988.

McDonough marked his big screen debut in 1990 with a minor role in Sam Raimi's superhero film "Darkman." His turn as Lou Gehrig opposite Stephen Lang's "Babe Ruth" earned him strong notices, as did a lead role in the Francis Ford Coppola-produced "White Dwarf." McDonough also lent his voice to numerous animated series, including "The Incredible Hulk," and fulfilled a personal goal by appearing on the bridge of the Enterprise for "Star Trek: First Contact."

In the Golden Globe and Emmy-winning HBO miniseries "Band of Brothers," produced by Tom Hanks and Spielberg, McDonough starred as Lieutenant Lynn "Buck" Compton, a rugged World War II hero whose all-American veneer is cracked by the horrors of war. His performance caught the attention of series producer Steven Spielberg, who later cast him as Tom Cruise's partner and friend in the science fiction thriller "Minority Report."

His performance as the slick, upwardly mobile Deputy District Attorney David McNorris in the NBC TV show "Boomtown" brought him both praise from the press and a Golden Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2004. He was also recognized by the Television Critics Association with a nomination for Individual Achievement in Drama. The short-lived series was followed by a starring role in another NBC show, "Medical Investigation."

McDonough also starred in films such as "Walking Tall," Clint Eastwood's award-nominated "Flags of Our Fathers" as a Marine captain, "The Hitcher," and the Al Pacino-led thriller "88 Minutes." McDonough also returned to television as the titular character in Syfy's six-hour miniseries "Tin Man," with Zooey Deschanel and Alan Cumming.

In 2008 McDonough joined the cast of "Desperate Housewives." In 2009 McDonough returned to theatrical features as Bison, the chief villain of the video game series "Street Fighter," in "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li." More notable that year was his nomination by the Screen Actors Guild as part of the cast of "Desperate Housewives."

Neal McDonough also appears in the films "The Guardian," alongside Kevin Costner, as a Coast Guard rescue swimmer haunted by tragedy, "Traitor," opposite Guy Pearce and Don Cheadle, "The Last Time," co-starring Michael Keaton and Brendan Fraser, "American Gothic," the indie film "Forever Strong," "Timeline," "A Perfect Little Man," which earned him the Best Actor Award at the 2000 Atlantic City Film Festival, and the thriller "I Know Who Killed Me," opposite Lindsay Lohan and Julia Ormond.

McDonough's stage credits include "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "Always Alone," the latter production earning him a Dramalogue Best Actor Award.

McDonough is married to Ruvé Robertson, with whom he has a son, Morgan Patrick (born November 2005), and two daughters, Catherine Maggie (born May 14, 2007) and London Jane (born January 11, 2010).
