Ola Vigen Hattestad is a cross-country skiing athlete competing at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics for Norway.
The Norwegian sprint team, collectively known as the "Red Army" because of their traditional red ski uniforms and their strategy of working together to seal off the advances of other skiers, teamed up with the Royal Norwegian Air Force for their main promotional campaign before the 2008-09 World Cup season. Despite finishing in the top-ten in the individual sprint at the 2006 Olympic Games, Hattestad was a late addition to the Norwegian team for the 2007 World Championships in Sapporo, Japan. His elation at being named to his first Worlds team turned to disappointment when race day came and his name was left off the lineup card. Two years later, at the 2009 World Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic, Hattestad used music that he had listened to in Japan to awaken his killer instinct. With his mother watching from the stands, Hattestad captured gold medals on consecutive days, first in the individual sprint, then in the team sprint with Johan Kjoelstad.
The 2008-09 season was a story of domination for Hattestad in the individual sprint, both in the classical and freestyle techniques. He had two three-event winning streaks, the first at the beginning of the season and the second culminating in the World Championships win. Sandwiched in between those six victories was a surprise loss at the Whistler Olympic Park, where he saw himself beaten at the finish line by Sweden's Emil Joensson. In all, Hattestad won seven of ten races he entered in the individual sprint event, and took two of two in the team sprint event.
