Patty Powers from "Relapse" is one of the sober coaches on the A&E reality docu-series.

In 1972, 12-year-old Patty Powers was an Honor Student on psychedelics. By 15 she had dropped out of high-school and began working at a prestigious hair salon. In no time she had her own apartment, a brand new car, and had traveled alone to Europe where, in London, she discovered punk rock. It was 1977. The consequences of drugs were minor in comparison with the lifestyle she was living.

On December 31, 1978, Patty Powers ("Relapse") moved into New York's Chelsea Hotel. A day later, she discovered heroin. Life was like a movie as she partied with the famous and infamous, participated in numerous crimes and hustles, and traveled the world. Then, on Christmas Eve 1980, she was withdrawing from heroin. While riding an escalator in Macys wearing only pajamas and an overcoat, she had her first "What's a nice girl like you..." moment.

She moved back to Canada, switched to milder drugs, got accepted into the University of Toronto, and met and married a painter. Eventually they moved to NYC—only this time she was at the center of the scene, working in the art department of the most popular nightclub. Everyone was hooked on drugs, Patty included. By 1986, the club became undone, and her marriage crumbled. Strung out and alone, she ran to LA and spiraled into the worst year of her addiction: strip clubs and living in abandoned buildings. Patty spent her 28th birthday in a Hawthorne jail. On December 10, 1988, she entered a drug treatment facility outside of New Orleans.

In the 90s, Patty unknowingly began working as a sober coach (sans title) when newly clean friends in the entertainment industry invited her on tour for recovery support. It became clear that her entire life's experiences, inside and outside of recovery, had prepared her for this work. Patty works independently as a sober coach and she is also available to meet with inner city at-risk youth on a voluntary basis. Patty Powers is a performance artist and a publish writer.

"Through coaching, I truly feel I am able to make a positive contribution to another person's life," she said.
