For ten seasons, Amanda Tapping has been the female lead of the longest running sci-fi series in television history – "Stargate SG-1" – starring as the brilliant, beautiful and bold Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Samantha Carter. As an astrophysics genius, Carter has become an expert on Gate technology and continues to portray the popular character on the successful spin-off series "Stargate Atlantis." In addition to starring in "Stargate Atlantis," Amanda Tapping recently re-teamed with her SG-1 co-stars for two upcoming DVD movies (filming portions north of the Artic Circle): "Stargate: The Ark of Truth" and "Stargate: Continuum," which are slated for release in 2008.
Aside from an active schedule working on the Stargate franchises, Amanda Tapping is currently executive producing and starring in the new media series "Sanctuary," which premiered on the Web in May of 2007 to overwhelming response. Amanda Tapping plays the gifted, colorful and intriguing Dr. Helen Magnus on this innovative fantasy-based sci-fi series, a unique role requiring Tapping to perfect a very distinctive English dialect blended with international undertones.
Amanda Tapping's talents have been recognized and awarded by her industry peers, and she served as host and presenter at the 21st Annual Gemini Awards, and most recently garnered a Canadian Comedy Award nomination as Best Actress for her performance in John Bolton's short film "Breakdown," alongside other esteemed nominees including Catherine O'Hara. Amanda Tapping is a member of Women in Film & Video and hosted their Spotlight Gala Awards. In 2003, Amanda Tapping made her directorial debut with an episode of "Stargate SG-1," entitled "Resurrection." As a result, Amanda Tapping was nominated as Best Director and won three Leo Awards as Best Actress. Amanda Tapping has also been nominated for two Gemini Awards as well as four Saturn Awards. Multichannel News and Women in Cable & Telecommunications honored her as a "Wonder Woman on Air" during their 2005 New York awards ceremony.
Amanda Tapping was born in Rochford, England and raised in Toronto, Canada with her three brothers. Amanda Tapping has enjoyed a flourishing TV career outside the gate, having had the pleasure to star on another show for the SCI FI Channel, "Proof Positive," exploring the science front of fact versus fiction. Amanda Tapping has also guest starred on such television series as "The X-Files," "Due South," "Forever Knight," "Kung-Fu: The Legend Continues," "The Newsroom," "Millennium" and "The Outer Limits." In addition, Amanda Tapping was a series regular on the Disney series Flash Forward. Amanda Tapping's other television credits include "Lessons in Love," "Remembrance," "The Haunting of Lisa," "Degree of Guilt" and the miniseries "Traffic."
Amanda Tapping's feature film credits include "Booty Call," "Rent A Kid," "Getting a Life," "Black Top," and the independent film "Stuck." Amanda Tapping also starred in "The Void" with Malcolm McDowell and Adrian Paul, and was specially chosen for a cameo in "Life or Something Like It" with Angelina Jolie and Edward Burns.
A graduate of the University of Windsor School of Dramatic Art, Amanda Tapping has performed in such theatrical productions as "Steel Magnolias," "Look Back In Anger," "Children of a Lesser God," "Noises Off," "The Lion in Winter," "Picnic," "The Shadow Walkers" and "The Taming of the Shrew." Amanda Tapping is also the co-founder of the Canadian comedy troupe, Random Acts, and is currently completing her first documentary film.
Stargate's popularity globally includes Armed Forces TV, and Amanda Tapping and the cast members were invited in December 2001 to visit the troops in Qatar on a USO Handshake Tour, spending one-on-one time with thousands of men and women over two days - a trip that was moving experience both personally and professionally.
Amanda Tapping is an active advocate of various charities and industry organizations. In March 2007, Amanda Tapping traveled to Toronto to perform in "The Vagina Monologues" as part of V-Day, a worldwide movement to end violence against women. Having a staunch commitment and passion for the arts, Amanda Tapping has worked closely mentoring new actors through Women in Film's "Flash Forward" program. Amanda Tapping is a supporter of numerous charitable organizations including contributing new computers to The Coast Foundation, a support agency for people with mental disabilities and also had the honor to serve as MC for the celebrated Diamond Ball in support of The Canadian Cancer Society. As well, Amanda Tapping is a proud spokesperson for UNICEF.
Amanda Tapping currently resides in Vancouver where she enjoys kayaking and hiking with her husband, Alan, daughter, Olivia, and their dog, George.
