Philipp Boy is a gymnast competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for Germany. He is a two-time world all-around silver medalist (2010, 2011) and the 2011 European all-around champion.

Philipp Boy secured his spot as a medal threat for the 2012 Olympics by winning his second-straight all-around silver medal at 2011 Worlds. He finished more than three points behind three-time champion Kohei Uchimura, but topped Japan's Koji Yamamuro who finished third.

Boy is unafraid to admit that Japan's Kohei Uchimura is in a class of his own. "Nobody can beat Uchimura, he is a very special gymnast,' he said after Worlds.

With two world silver medals to his credit, Boy says he is recognized more and more on the street and in restaurants in Germany. He appreciates that gymnastics is getting more recognition in his country. Previously, his teammate Fabian Hambuechen was the face of German gymnastics, but Boy told Welt online that "Germany has learned that gymnastics is more than Hambuechen."

He won his first European title at home in April 2011. Held in Berlin, Boy topped teammate Marcel Nguyen as the top qualifier. In the Final, he struggled on pommel horse, but scored big on floor, high bar, and vault to claim gold over Romania's Flavius Koczi by five hundredths of a point (0.050). Boy also won the silver medal on high bar at Europeans.

At 2010 Worlds in Rotterdam, Boy finished second in qualifying behind defending champion Kohei Uchimura of Japan and was certainly an all-around podium contender. Despite a mistake on his final event, high bar, Boy held on to win his first ever world all-around medal, a silver. He edged out American Jonathan Horton, who won bronze.

Prior to winning individual silver at 2010 Worlds, Boy led Germany to the team bronze medal. Competing on all six apparatus in the three-up-three-count style of competition, Boy was solid and helped his team knock the United States off the podium (4th).

Boy has his sights set on an Olympic medal. He finished fourth with Germany in the team event at the 2008 Beijing Games and 13th in the all-around.

He trains in Cottbus without other elite German gymnasts. When asked about moving to train, Boy said, "It's really really important for me to have my family and friends around me. When I'm in another town where I don't have my circle, I know that I don't feel very good."

Before he competes, Boy listens to music. "Music is a very big part of my life," he said. "I can navigate my feelings because of the music. What music I listen to — I never tell anyone because it's my secret."

He is a bit of an adrenaline junkie and would love to go for a ride in a Formula 1 car someday. He also likes to play tennis.

Boy began gymnastics at age four because he was "hyper" child and his mom knew of a gymnastics trainer.
