Phyllis Logan stars in "Downton Abbey" on PBS as the housekeeper Mrs. Hughes. Logan has a meaningful connection with the wartime setting of the series, saying "It's so poignant for me. My grandfather fought in the First World War and died three days before the Armistice. He left behind eight children — my father was just 17 months old and he never knew his own father. There is a real potency about the First World War because we still know people who had a direct connection with it."

Phyllis Logan hails from a small town in Scotland, and is a graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. She made her debut in the TV movie "Red Dress" in 1977, but her big break came when she was cast as the lead in the 1983 film "Another Time, Another Place," a role for which she won numerous awards. With a substantive list of film and television credits to her name including "Lovejoy," playing Lady Jane Felsham from 1986 to 1994, "Bust," portraying Sheila Walsh, "Holby City," playing Muriel McKendrick, "Secrets and Lies," "Shooting Fish" and "Silent Witness." Logan has also appeared in the "Masterpiece" productions of "And a Nightingale Sang" and "All the King's Men.
