Qiu Bo is a diver competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for China.

When Qiu Bo was watching the Beijing Olympics on TV, he says he never imagined himself standing there four years later, yet a mere one year later he joined the national team, went to his first world championships and won a silver medal on 10m. He was in position for gold but missed his final, most difficult dive, a reverse 2 ½ with 2 ½ twists, allowing Tom Daley to take the title. Qiu won two golds at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, running away with the individual event by more than 40 points and the synchro contest with Huo Liang by more than 37 points. Won the 10m event at the 2012 World Cup in London by more than 52 points.

Although Qiu was bested by Great Britain's Tom Daley at the 2009 Worlds, Daley has failed to get the best of him since then, and when Qiu ran away with the 2011 world title, his score of 585.45 was more than 80 points better than Daley's. Qiu says that every time he competes against Daley, he gets very excited and can feel his blood boil. He says he loves facing that kind of competition, although he has also said at other times that his main competition is from himself and his own lofty standards. Daley openly admits that Qiu is the favorite and even suggested he might be on his way to becoming the best diver ever, but he has also wondered aloud whether his rival truly enjoys competing on the grand stage. "At the moment [the gold medal] is theirs to throw away but they don't like pressure, so if you pile pressure on, you'll never know what might happen," he told Reuters in June. Speaking with his local paper, the Plymouth Herald, Daley said, "Qiu Bo has never been to an Olympic Games, so he's not going to know what it's like. There will be a lot of pressure on him, because he's the favourite and from China. And, gradually, everyone's scores around the world are getting higher and higher and therefore, closer to him."

Qiu won both the 3m and 10m competitions at the inaugural Youth Olympics in 2010 in Singapore. He says it was very hard because, by rule, divers had to compete in both platform and springboard, and he was "very surprised and pleased" to win the springboard event over a strong field, since he rarely trains on that board.

Like many of the Chinese divers, Qiu's diving hero growing up was Dmitri Sautin. The Russian won eight Olympic medals during his career that spanned from the 1992 Games through Beijing. Qiu is the top-ranked 10m platform diver in the world and could easily win a gold medal in Beijing.

Qiu is from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province in southwest China. He started trampoline gymnastics at age five and when he was seven, a diving coach spotted him. Qiu is an only child. His parents are retired factory workers. His father worked in machinery factory but retired due to a bad wrist, while his mother worked in a factory that made cotton products. For fun, Qiu enjoys surfing the net and listening to music. He enjoys basketball and is a big Kobe Bryant fan. Qiu's favorite dives are 207B and 307C.
